    GSM4K/4G SIM installation guide

    The GSM4K/4G is the current version of Videx's best-known gate intercom, moved onto the 4G network as 2G and 3G wind down. Same modular 4000-series format: GSM module, up to 50 call buttons, antenna, and calls out to any programmed phone number with divert through up to four numbers per button.

    Which SIM does the Videx GSM4K/4G take?

    The 4G module takes a nano SIM (4FF) — unlike the old 2G GSM4K, which took a standard SIM. If you're swapping an old panel for the 4G version, your existing SIM won't fit. Check before you're up a ladder.

    The SIM must be registered and active before installation. Videx don't supply one.

    Which network?

    Any UK network with 4G at the gate. That last part is the catch: coverage maps describe the house, not the gate pillar 80 metres down the drive behind a hedge. A multi-network SIM connects to whichever network is strongest at the antenna, which is the closest thing to a guarantee a GSM intercom gets.

    Set a spend cap on any pay-monthly SIM.

    Fitting the SIM

    For the installing engineer, panel powered down:

    1. The SIM holder is on the rear of the 4G GSM module.
    2. Release the holder, seat the nano SIM — it only fits one way — and click it home.
    3. Connect the antenna before power. Powering a GSM module with no antenna fitted is a good way to shorten its life.

    First power-up

    Give it around 30 seconds to initialise. Beeps and the busy LED tell you where it's at — leave the buttons and SMS commands alone until the busy LED stops flashing, then make a test call.

    If it won't connect

    • No registration: check the SIM is active and PIN lock is off. Test it in a phone.
    • Weak signal: relocate the antenna higher or clear of metalwork before blaming the SIM.
    • SMS commands bounce: verify the SMS service centre number is present on the SIM.

    FAQ

    Is the GSM4K/4G future-proof? As much as anything in this trade is. 4G has no announced sunset in the UK. It's the version to fit new.

    Can I move my old GSM4K SIM into it? Only with a change of form factor — the old panel takes standard, this takes nano. Order the right size rather than cutting cards down.

    Does it need a data plan? No — calls and SMS are what it uses. Voice-capable SIMs only; data-only IoT SIMs won't make calls.
